Packaging is often the first physical interaction we have with a product. Before we taste the food, try the skincare or use what is inside the box, we have already handled the materials chosen to protect, present and deliver it.
That makes packaging an important part of the sustainability conversation. Yet it is also an area where simple labels can make a complicated subject appear more straightforward than it really is.
“Recyclable” is a useful characteristic, but it does not tell us the whole story. A package can technically be recyclable while still using more material than necessary, travelling inefficiently or being difficult to process through the recycling systems available where it is actually sold.
A more useful question, then, is not simply can this package be recycled? It is how thoughtfully has the entire package been designed?

Recycling tends to receive a lot of attention because it is the stage consumers see most clearly. We finish a product, separate the packaging and decide which bin it belongs in.
But the environmental story of packaging begins much earlier.

In other words, recycling matters. It simply should not have to carry the entire sustainability story.
1. Is all that packaging actually necessary?
One of the most straightforward questions is also one of the easiest to overlook: how much packaging does the product genuinely need?
Packaging has legitimate jobs to do. It can protect products from damage, contamination, moisture and light. It can provide instructions and safety information. In some categories, effective packaging can also help preserve a product for longer.
The goal therefore isn’t automatically to remove packaging altogether. It is to consider whether every component has a useful function.
Oversized boxes, unnecessary internal layers and decorative components that are immediately discarded can increase material use without necessarily improving the product experience.

For brands, that might mean asking whether a box can be right-sized, whether an insert is necessary, or whether the same level of protection could be achieved with less material.
Sometimes the more sustainable-looking package isn’t the one with the most visible environmental messaging. It may simply be the one that quietly does its job with less.
2. Material choice needs context
Paper, cardboard, glass, aluminium and different plastics all come with their own environmental considerations. The same applies to newer bio-based, compostable and alternative packaging materials.
This is why broad assumptions such as “paper is sustainable” or “plastic is unsustainable” aren’t particularly helpful.
Materials require resources and energy to produce. Their weight and physical properties can affect transportation. Some formats are readily collected through established recycling systems, while others require specialist facilities. A material that works well for one application may perform poorly in another.
Even apparently positive characteristics can involve trade-offs. 3. Good packaging design considers the whole system
This is where design becomes particularly important.
Packaging is not simply decoration applied after a product has been developed. Choices about shape, structure, materials and functionality can influence how efficiently a product is packed, transported, used and eventually disposed of.
A considered packaging design process can therefore look beyond visual identity to questions such as material choice, structural efficiency, protection and what happens after the package has served its original purpose.

That is why good design often feels surprisingly simple: enough packaging to perform the job properly, without unnecessary complexity.

4. Reuse can change the equation
For some products, the next question is whether the package needs to become waste after a single use.
Refill systems, returnable containers and packaging designed for repeated use can reduce reliance on single-use formats. The EPA includes reuse alongside source reduction at the more environmentally preferred end of its waste-management hierarchy. (US EPA)
But “reusable” deserves the same scrutiny as “recyclable.”
A reusable package only fulfils that potential when there is a realistic way for people to use it repeatedly. A heavy container that requires considerable resources to manufacture but is discarded after one use does not automatically deliver the intended benefits simply because it could have been reused.
Convenience matters here.
Can it be refilled easily? Is there an accessible return system? Is the package durable enough for repeated cycles? Does the business model actually support reuse?
Designing for circularity means considering the system around the object, rather than relying solely on the properties of the object itself.
5. Recyclability still matters — but the details matter too
None of this makes recycling unimportant.

The complication is that recyclability isn’t determined solely by what is printed on a package.
Collection, sorting and processing infrastructure are part of the equation. Different communities may accept different materials, and seemingly small design choices — including combinations of materials and components — can affect what happens once packaging enters a recovery system.
Consumers therefore benefit from clear, specific disposal instructions rather than broad environmental claims.
Brands can help by making those instructions easy to find and understand, while avoiding language that implies a particular end-of-life outcome is guaranteed.
6. Sustainable packaging should communicate clearly
There is another element of packaging sustainability that has little to do with what the package is physically made from: communication.
Terms such as “green,” “planet-friendly,” “natural” and “eco” can sound reassuring without necessarily telling consumers very much.
More useful information is specific.
A brand might explain that a package contains recycled material, identify its principal materials, provide relevant disposal instructions or describe a refill or return programme. Where limitations exist, transparency can be valuable too.
This does not require covering a box in sustainability claims. In fact, restraint can make information easier to understand.
The objective should be to give people enough information to make an informed decision and dispose of the packaging appropriately — not to persuade them that a package has no environmental impact.

7. Sometimes the packaging protects something more valuable
There is also an easily missed part of the equation: what the package prevents from being wasted.
Food is an obvious example. Packaging that helps preserve freshness or prevents damage can perform an environmental function even though the package itself eventually becomes waste. Similar logic can apply elsewhere. Packaging may prevent fragile products from breaking during delivery or protect formulations from contamination and deterioration.
This doesn’t justify excessive packaging. Rather, it demonstrates why packaging should be evaluated as part of a system.
The smallest possible package isn’t necessarily the most responsible one. The better target is enough protection, delivered as efficiently as reasonably possible.
What can consumers look for?
It isn’t realistic to conduct a life-cycle assessment every time we pick something from a shelf. Fortunately, we don’t need to.
A few practical questions can reveal much more than a single sustainability label:
- Is the amount of packaging proportionate to the product? Look for designs that avoid obvious excess while still providing necessary protection.
- Are the materials clearly identified? Specific information is generally more useful than vague environmental language.
- Is reuse genuinely practical? Consider whether refill or return options are actually accessible to you.
- Are disposal instructions clear? Check what your local recycling or organics system accepts rather than relying solely on assumptions.
- Does the design make sense as a whole? Material efficiency, product protection, transport, reuse and end-of-life all deserve consideration.
- Is the brand transparent about limitations? Sustainability is rarely absolute. Specific, verifiable information can be more meaningful than claims of perfection.
These questions aren’t intended to turn everyday shopping into homework. They simply provide a more useful framework when packaging is an important factor in a purchasing decision.

Beyond the recyclable label
The future of more sustainable packaging is unlikely to be defined by one perfect material.
Instead, progress can come from many interconnected decisions: eliminating unnecessary components, using materials more efficiently, improving sourcing, designing workable reuse systems, protecting products effectively and making recovery easier at the end of use.
Recycling remains part of that picture. But treating it as the finish line can distract us from opportunities to prevent waste much earlier.
For consumers, the shift can be equally simple. Rather than searching for packaging that appears perfectly sustainable, we can become better at recognising thoughtful decisions and asking useful questions.
For businesses, sustainable packaging design is ultimately an exercise in context. What is the package protecting? How much material does that require? Where did those materials come from? How efficiently can the finished product move through its supply chain? Can anything be eliminated or reused? And what is realistically likely to happen when the package reaches the end of its useful life?
Those questions may not produce one universal answer. They can, however, support better packaging decisions — and a more meaningful understanding of sustainability beyond the recycling symbol.
